World Premiere at the 34th Annual American Indian Film Festival

Oct 15, 2009

DaviesRussell, Jody Marriott Bar-Lev and Karen Walsh found out that their short documentary not only was accepted at the American Indian Film Festival but will also have its world premiere Monday, Nov 9th at the Landmark Embarcadero Cinema in San Francisco, CA. The 34th Annual AIFF is the oldest and most prestigious of its type in the U.S. and is considered by many to be the premier film festival in the world for indigenous persons. Highlights, of the 9 day festival, include the premiere of Wes Studi's "The Only Good Indian". Wes came to prominence in "Dances with Wolves" and "Last of the Mohicans". He will also be featured in James Cameron's  "Avatar" this fall. Congrats to all of our production team and to the noble people of the Great Sioux Nation.

 Weinerfest Premieres!

"Ed Gein, The Musical Gets National Coverage"

On Friday, June 19th the work print (rough copy) of the film, "Wienerfest, The Movie" premiered at Berge's Whitelaw Sausage WienerFest in Whitelaw, WI. Even though it was a rough copy the overall response was very positive. Last Summer over 7500 people attended their inaugural event. This year they had close to 10,000 partygoers for the weekend long festivities. To get you up to speed...this past summer  DaviesRussell was the production team along with VTA on a full-length feature film called "Wienerfest, The Movie". This movie is a comedy in the same vein as "Beerfest", "Caddy Shack" and "Napoleon Dynamite". It was directed by Rex Piano of The History Channel's "Rome, The Rise and Fall of an Empire" and scores of Lifetime and Hallmark films. It stars Bobby Ray Shafer (Bob Vance of NBC's "The Office") Miguel Najera (Tonio of F/X's "The Shield" & Tomas of Fox's "24") David Storrs (SciFi's "Scare Tactics") Kelly Walker (Everybody Hates Chris and Boogeyman 2) and Dan Davies. Dan plays a one-dimensional braggart named Hunter Rolph (Typecasting at its finest!) In the movie Hunter has fake hair, fake smile, fake tan and fake muscles...a real stretch for Dan! LOL! Steve ended up being a movie workhorse putting in 14-16 hour days as the Director of Photography. He also worked the Glidecam to perfection! The fully finished movie comes out the Fall of 2009. Before that, please pop onto their website for their upcoming trailer/movie preview.

Also "Ed Gein, The Musical" the full-length feature film, currently in production, has become internationally reknown. Recently Doug Zellmer, from the Oshkosh Northwestern, wrote a very nice article about this somewhat controversial production. This article and subsequent photos were the second most dowloaded photo gallery in their history! Second only to Johnny Depp's "Public Enemies" filming in Oshkosh, WI. Subsequently a publicity firestorm hit. Every Gannett owned newspaper in the state featured the article and photo gallery and then it hit the Associated Press. That same article or a summary thereof, was featured in almost 100 newspapers nationwide including the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the Examiner, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, New York Daily News, and the USA Today in their Wisconsin section as well as their Hollywood Quotes section! On top of that, they were featured in Canada's National Post, Vancouver Sun, Edmonton Journal, Windsor Star, The Star Phoenix, and the Montreal Gazette.  DaviesRussell has done scores of TV and radio interviews and have been featured on WTDY in Madison, KSPT in Minneapolis, WTMJ and WKTI in Milwaukee, Wisconsin Public Radio, Minnesota Public Radio, WGN in Chicago and even National Public Radio (NPR). Mentions of "Ed Gein, The Musical" have also been on thousands of websites and blogs. It's just amazing to realize that in early June less than 50 people knew about this project. Today, just a few weeks later, very easily over 20,000,000 people have either read, saw or heard something about it. Incredible!

Oldie, but Goodie News

The short film/trailer for "Ed Gein, The Musical" won a major award at the 42nd Annual Houston International Film Festival. Dan Davies, Steve Russell and Ron Bullock found out that they won a Gold Remi April 25th, during the Remi Awards Gala & Dinner at The Renaissance Hotel Grand Ballroom in Houston. This is arguably considered the most prestigious film award in independent film. For VTA this rare honor will be their third!

The 8th Annual Wildwood Film Festival premeired and showcased not one, not two, but three productions that DaviesRussell was a major producer in. "Thor's Kitchen", "Thor's Kitchen II" and the long form trailer for "Wienerfest-The Movie" was shown April 18th at the PAC (Performing Arts Center in Appleton, WI) Blame Society Films should be very proud of their hit webisode series "Thor's Kitchen"

Speaking of Thor, for the third time in a row, an episode of Thor's Kitchen is a Youtube Featured Spotlight. Thor's Kitchen (Episode 3) "Cake Failure" was the Youtube Featured Spotlight in the Comedy Category on February 27th. It replaced a video vignette from "The Onion" and was replaced by "Super Obama Girl" on February 28th. According to the Wall Street Journal Online there are over 84 million videos on Youtube. Almost 20 million of those videos are considered Comedy Category Videos. To be honored once, let alone three times in a row, is singularly unique and exceptionally rare. All told, this series' webisodes have garnered over 200 unique Youtube honors and over 500,000 views and counting. Congratulations to Blame Society Films (BSF) for this extremely rare and prestigious honor. DaviesRussell is very proud to work with such wonderful talents and they're honored to be an integral part of this multi-award winning web series. Thank you BSF, Aaron Yonda, Matt Sloan and Brad Knight.

 UPDATES

Six new episodes of the Internet sensation "Thor's Kitchen" will be shot this Summer/Fall.

"Thor's Kitchen" is a short TV/Internet pilot that was filmed in the DaviesRussell TV studio. This comedic short was created by the "Chad Vader" people, Matt Sloan and Aaron Yonda. "Chad Vader" is arguably the most downloaded webisode series ever with over 30 million views and counting. Matt and Aaron have been featured on "Good Morning America", VH1, the BBC, Deal or no Deal etc. and are considered the first true superstars of the Internet. This comedic short stars Matt as Dionysus, Aaron as a Woodland Nymph, Brad Knight as Thor and Dan Davies as Hercules. For Hercules, they were looking for an incredibly vain musclehead with fake hair, fake smile, fake tan and large, pretty, but completely useless muscles... again another stretch for Dan! LOL! Again Steve put in a yeoman's effort as one of the Principal Cameramen and Graphics Designer (Steve designed the awesome and completly unique "Thor's Kitchen" logo) This project is currently being shopped around to national cable and network stations. You may check the video out on Youtube.

Last but not least they were filming in South Dakota for a couple of weeks this past July 2008. Working in conjunction with Jody Marriott Bar-Lev of CoolGreenWorld and Cambridge International Academies USA, Inc and Karen Walsh of BBC and National Geographic fame, they filmed a short preview video on one of the last remaining wild horse herds in the US. These horses, located on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, can trace their bloodline to the original horses brought by the Spanish Conquistadores (de Soto, Cortes, etc) These explorers re-introduced the modern horse to North America almost 500 years ago. Wild horses are endangered and this short video will shed light on their plight and the plight of the noble and beautiful Lakota-Sioux people. Look for the premeire of this video, tentatively scheduled for The Playboy Mansion in Hollywood this spring. A full-length feature documentary or a TV pilot on this subject will also be forthcoming in 2010.
